Not that long ago large coal-fired steam engines would have crossed the canal over these stones, which are the sides of a dismantled bridge, on the way to Bradley Fold, I think, from Radcliffe.

Wednesday 27th February 2013.

Old ‘valves’ by the River Irwell were probably used to regulate water-flow, along man-made streams, to local factories years ago. Nearby the weir, at Warth, now has a very ‘modern’ Archimedes Screw generating electricity. A new machine using old ‘ideas’.
